OUR SERVICE AREA

The Chatham Volunteer Fire Department currently serves roughly 100 square miles.  This includes the entire town of Chatham and the surrounding parts Pittsylvania County.  Our area extends North to Whittles Station, South to Dry Fork, East to Spring Garden and Markham, and West to Rhondo.

Our department is vested with more responsibility then most other stations in the county. We serve approximately 10,000 residents and 150 businesses. During the week, the population increases to between 13,000 and 14,000 people. The Norfolk Southern rail line and U.S. Highway 29 also carry large amounts of people and cargo through our service area consistently. There are seven schools, one nursing home, several day care centers, three different courts, the Social Services building, and two shopping centers in and around Chatham.  The government offices for Pittsylvania County and the town of Chatham, the Sheriff’s Office, the County Jail, a Virginia State Correctional Facility, the VDOT residency for this county, the new Virginia State Police Office, and the E911 Communications Center (CECOM) are located here as well.  We are responsible for protecting two chemical plants, two plywood manufacturers, a Transco natural gas pipeline pumping station, a cable production facility, and Chatham Oil Company’s two storage sites just outside of town. In addition to all of this, a section of Main Street has been designated as an historic district in recognition of the many valuable homes and government buildings along Chatham’s main thoroughfare that are significant to the history of the region and state.
