The Chatham Fire Department operates
with six trucks. Our trucks include two pumpers, two brush trucks, one
pumper-tanker, and one 75-Ft platform ladder truck.
Our pumper-tanker is a brand new 2002
Pierce truck with a 2000-gallon tank. This truck is quite possibly one of the
best tankers in the county. Not only does it have the ability to carry a large
amount of water to the scene of a fire, but with its 1000 GPM pump, it can also
operate as a pumper if one of our two mainline pumpers were to go out of
service. It has the ability deploy a portable “drop tank” to empty its water
load into. This allows the truck to go after another load of water. Most
tankers carry drop tanks, however this one is stored on a hydraulic lift that
makes it easier on the firefighters to deploy it on the fire scene.
The platform-ladder, known as Ladder
21, is the only one of its kind in Pittsylvania County. Although the City of
Danville has several ladders and one platform ladder, Ladder 21 is the only one
operated by a county fire department. This truck is very instrumental for
fighting fires in some of the large buildings within our territory and without
the truck it would be nearly impossible to save these structures. This truck
has fought two major fires at Hargrave Military Academy, the Eastern Panel
Corp. fire, the Powell Hotel fire, and numerous fires at Columbia Forest
Products. Sartomer Chemical Company, Times Fiber, and Chatham Hall are other
locations where the truck could possibly be needed. Ladder 21 will travel anywhere if called upon for mutual aid.
