On Sunday, October 20, 2002 The Chatham Volunteer Fire Department enjoyed the use of the Burn Building at the Danville & Pittsylvania County Regional Fire Training Center. We used the center to test, use, and familiarize our firefighters with the new NFPA 2002 Compliant SCBA’s made by Scott and MSA, in real life situations. We also tested thermal imaging cameras from Scott, MSA, and Bullard. In August our department received a $137,000 grant from FEMA to purchase 22 SCBA’s, a thermal imaging camera, and an air compressor. The training we conducted at the burn building will help us deicide which equipment best suits our department’s specific needs.

The Burn Building is an excellent facility for firefighters to train safely in real situations. The fire departments in Danville and Pittsylvania County are lucky to have such building.

Here you see several of our firefighters outside the building talking to sales representatives.

Russell Bolden from Scott, in the red, watches as some of our guys put on Scott SCBA’s and prepare to enter the building.

Lt. Bobby Campbell, FF Doug Powell, Chief Landon Worsham, and FF Tim Hammell watch the thermal imaging monitor inside the case at the command post. This monitor allows the incident commander to see what the firefighters on the inside see through their thermal imaging cameras.

FEARLESS! Lt. Bobby Campbell has served with our department since 1967.

Training Officer Jacob Coles puts on an MSA air pack as Rodney Roberts, an SCBA sales rep from Sure-Flo, Inc., looks on. Jacob is also a Danville firefighter assigned to Station #4.

DO WE REALLY WANT TO FOLLOW THIS GUY IN!

Lt. Rodney Brooks is another one of our Danville firefighters; he is assigned to Danville Station # 1.

Firefighter Tim Hammell poses for a picture. Tim is one of our newest members.

The Danville Fire Department’s Air Truck was on hand to refill our bottles.

Chatham Fire 211 is our first due pumper,

carrying 1000 gallons of water and a 1250 gallon-per-minute pump.

Fire 212 is our second due pumper.

This truck has served us well and our members have taken good care of her.

Both of our pumpers carry plenty of 5-inch supply line,

which increases our water flow at the fire scene tremendously.
